"I love a puzzle," says Laura, "and every architecture project is a multi-faceted puzzle of interrelationships that all need to be brought into harmony in a physical space." One of the most complex puzzles in her portfolio is the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Building at the University of Illinois. "It was the most challenging, yet rewarding, project of my career," she notes. "At the building dedication, ECE presented a film on the historic innovations of the department. I was proud that SmithGroup’s work could help further their exploration." A fan of mid-century modern design, Laura lives in the landmark Marina Towers in downtown Chicago. "As architects we design buildings, and our vision brings them into the world," she notes. "I serve on the Marina Towers condo board to support the stewardship of this iconic structure that was the vision of Bertrand Goldberg."
